Application of transversal tools and techniques to all phases of a mentoring session for entrepreneurs.
How can we help our entrepreneur to discover something new, to change his or her feelings, to get out of a blockage, to take action?
A coaching or mentoring session can have a profoundly catalytic impact for the entrepreneur, when he or she experiences an broadening awareness that changes the way you see yourself or your situation, and connects you with new resources to move towards your goal.
What does the coach/mentor do to make this happen?
In this TIP we explore different resources available to the coach/mentor to help the entrepreneur in this process.
The objectives of this TIP:
- Understanding what we mean by: "Transversal Tools and Techniques in Coaching and Mentoring". and what their role is in the session with the entrepreneur.
- Remembering the phases of the session within which we can apply different techniques and tools.
- Knowing different tools and techniques available to the coach/mentor.
- Understanding what The purpose of each technique or tool and when to use it.
The structure of the session as a framework for the coaching or mentoring conversation:
As in any accompaniment process, the ability of the coach/mentor to create a relationship of trust is key. (see TIP) from a full presence and an attitude of respect and non-judgement towards the human being in front of him.
With this relationship as a basis, the supports the "Structure of the Session", as the main methodology for the conversation with the entrepreneur.
This structure functions as the framework that is applied to the session, in order to bring order and focus; guides us through the phases of the conversation.
In the "Figure", we recall the objectives of each phase. The structure of the mentoring session according to the GROW model:
AGREE OBJECTIVE SESSION | EXPLORE REALITY | EXPLORE OTHER OPTIONS | DEFINE A PLAN OF ACTION |
To generate: | |||
What is your challenge? | Initial situation | New awareness of the challenge/self. | What action will you take? |
What do you want to achieve today? | What have you tried? | New ideas. | How, when, support, reminders...? |
What for? | How do you feel? | Different emotionality. | |
Vision, challenge achieved? | What do they say? |
Within this solid framework offered by the structure of the session, and in an environment of trust that we have created for working together, cross-cutting tools and techniques come into play to help the entrepreneur discover something new and move forward with his or her goal.
How to choose a tool or technique?
Each technique or tool has its objective or desired results. Therefore, in order to choose a technique or tool during the session, as a coach/mentor, we have to ask ourselves what the entrepreneur needs from the conversation at that moment, what would help him or her to have a more effective conversation.
We present a (non-exhaustive) list of possible needs that we may observe in our entrepreneur and the most recommended tools or techniques to address that need as mentors.
