This is the first round of funding for a startup. Seed round investors are usually friends and family, angels or seed capital groups. The seed round provides the startup with the funding needed to develop an idea and create a business plan. The objective of the seed round is to raise enough capital to cover the start-up costs of the company, such as research and development, building a team, and creating a viable product or service. At this stage, investors obtain an equity stake in the company and expect a long-term return through an exit or acquisition by another company or by a business angel (+).
Here are some tips for a successful seed round
- Market focus: make sure you have a clear and thorough understanding of the market you are targeting and how your product or service fits the needs of that market.
- Build a strong team: Investors are looking for a team of experienced founders with a great vision. Make sure you have a strong and complementary team with market and industry experience.
- Develop a sound business plan: make sure you have a comprehensive and well thought-out business plan that includes clear objectives, an effective marketing strategy, a growth strategy and a realistic financial plan.
- Make a good presentation: make sure your pitch is engaging, concise and well-structured. Spend time on your presentation and do good research on the investors you are targeting.
- Displays a key metric: make sure you have solid key metrics that show the growth potential and profitability of your business.
- Network (+): Explore your contacts and make new connections in the startup ecosystem. Participate in events and attend investor networking group meetings.
- Be patient: the process of getting a seed round can be long and frustrating, but be patient and don't give up. Make sure you have a plan B in case the seed round doesn't work out and always keep a positive and professional attitude.
