Although you should invest in sectors that you are familiar with, in this TIP, we will give examples of what business angels have liked best in the past, this may change as new opportunities arise. Business angels tend to invest in a wide range of sectors, but they tend to have a preference for those in which they have experience or expertise. Some of the most common sectors in which business angels invest include: technology, software, biotechnology, financial services, media, professional services and internet services.
Investors can also look for opportunities in new emerging sectors, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and cybersecurity. In general, business angels, are looking to invest in startups with strong growth potential and profitability, and may therefore be interested in a wide range of sectors.
In Spain and according to the AEBAN-IESE study
Several sectors account for a large part of the investment operations that have taken place in 2021 (see figure).
- Among those most favoured by investor interest are ICT and software, health and medical equipment, biotechnology and, to a lesser extent, financial services. ICT and software are the main investment sectors, as almost four out of ten business angels have made an investment in these areas.
- Health and medical equipment is the second area of interest, attracting investment from a third of respondents.
- Biotechnology is in third place, with 29% of investors having made deals in this sector.
Investors in financial services (fintech and insurtech) are relegated to fourth place, but they tend to be a relevant group, year after year, in Spain and other countries, occupying the top positions in the main global ecosystems. Although ICT and software remain the area attracting most interest among investors, it should be noted that it has lost traction compared to previous years.
