The SIES battery (Mentee Satisfaction Evaluation System) is a a tool designed to measure the satisfaction and impact of the mentoring process on the mentee and the mentor. It consists of a series of questions and evaluations that are carried out throughout the mentoring process to assess the effectiveness of the programme and make improvements to it.

The SIES battery is a tool useful for mentoring programmes because it allows to evaluate the impact of the programme on mentors and mentees, to identify areas for improvement and to make necessary adjustments to improve the quality of the mentoring process. In addition, it also helps mentors improve their skills and performance by receiving specific feedback from their mentee.

Practical example of the battery of yeses

The SIES battery is an evaluation tool for the mentoring process that allows to measure the performance and satisfaction of mentors and mentees in different areas of their relationship.

A practical example of the SIES battery could be the following:

A mentor and mentee have been working together for six months in a mentoring process in which the mentor has been supporting the mentee in setting up their own business. To evaluate their progress and the mentoring process, both complete the SIES battery.

  • In the Satisfaction section, the mentee rates his/her overall satisfaction with the mentoring process as 5 (very satisfied) and the mentor rates his/her overall satisfaction as 4 (satisfied).
  • In the Impact section, the mentee rates the impact of the mentoring process on his/her business as a 6 (very high) and the mentor rates the impact of the mentoring process on the mentee's business as a 5 (high).
  • In the Effectiveness section, the mentee rates the mentor's effectiveness in helping him/her define his/her business strategy as a 4 (satisfied) and the mentor rates his/her own effectiveness in this aspect as a 5 (very effective).
  • In the Synergy section, the mentee rates communication with their mentor as a 6 (very high) and the mentor rates communication with their mentee as a 5 (high).
  • In the Ability section, the mentee rates the mentor's ability to guide him/her in decision making as a 5 (high) and the mentor rates his/her own ability in this regard as a 6 (very high).

Finally, in the Challenge section, the mentee rates the level of challenge provided by the mentor as a 4 (satisfied) and the mentor rates his/her own level of challenge provided as a 5 (high).

RESULTS

Based on these results, the mentor and mentee can identify areas where they are performing well and areas where they need to improve and set goals for the future of the mentoring process. They can also use the results to adjust and improve their relationship in specific areas where ratings are not as high as they would like.

TASK

CASE STUDY OF THE USE OF A BATTERY OF YESES IN A MENTORING PROCESS

Clara is an entrepreneur who is starting her handmade jewellery business. She has enlisted the help of a mentor to guide her through the process of launching her brand and to help her develop business skills.

The mentor decides to use the SIES battery as a tool to assess Clara's level of competences and establish an action plan to develop the areas that need improvement.

First, the mentor explains to Clara what the SIES battery consists of and how the assessment will be carried out. Then, the SIES battery, which consists of six key areas, is carried out.

KEY AREAS
  • Vision: Clara must define her vision and mission as an entrepreneur and be clear about what she wants to achieve in the long term.
  • Knowledge of the business: Clara needs to know the market, the competition, potential customers and suppliers in order to make informed decisions.
  • Planning and organisation: Clara must have a clear and organised plan of action to achieve her objectives.
  • Communication and marketing: Clara must know how to promote her business and communicate effectively with customers and suppliers.
  • Financial management: Clara must be able to manage her finances and budget for her business.
  • Personal skills: Clara must have personal skills such as leadership, resilience and the ability to work as part of a team.

The mentor assesses Clara in each of these areas, using a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 indicates that a lot of work is needed and 5 indicates that the skill is mastered. After the assessment, the mentor reviews the results with Clara and together they establish an action plan to develop the areas that need improvement.

For example, the mentor discovers that Clara needs to improve in financial management and planning and organisation. They then set up a plan for Clara to learn about budgeting, inventory control and cost management, and to develop a more detailed action plan for her business.

Throughout the mentoring process, the mentor and Clara will continue to use the SIES battery to assess progress and make adjustments to the action plan as necessary. In this way, Clara can develop key entrepreneurial skills and achieve success in her handmade jewellery business.
