What is the essence of coaching?

Socrates the philosopher made famous his Method of Dialogues (Mayeutica) based on questions. With it, he boasted that he was able to get people to make ideas seem like ideas, to make them seem like themselves. And, perhaps, his clearest hallmark, his greatest legacy was HIS ETHICS. That is the essence of the Coaching. Accompanying people in processes in which, from beginning to end, the individual is the protagonist.

  • Defines its objectives.
  • Identifies its barriers, and their tools.
  • It is proposed to goals.
  • Get results.

The same applies to the processes of Coaching for an entire team.

Business Coaching

It is a process of ethical and experienced accompaniment that estimulates, provokes and encourages something that anyone who wants to be a leader needs: SELF-LEADERSHIP. And, it is that, It is naïve to believe that a person can effectively (and ethically) lead others without being able to lead themselves. Dialoguing with a coach involves looking from a different location than one usually has. And, when that happens, the person begins to see the same old things in a new way, which, inevitably, will lead him to achieve different results, those it "persistently, and inappropriately" achieves.

It is not a question of letting oneself be guided, but of letting oneself be accompanied.

It is not about "knowing" everything that leaders know, it is about think like leaders think. And, in the process, the Coachingis proving to be an excellent tool. We can summarise by saying that: he who leads his life, leads his business. One of the deeper failures in most organisations is poor (or non-existent) communication.

Now think of a meeting with your team in which you get:

  • Punctuality at the beginning and at the end.
  • Consensus in the rules, objectives and conclusions.
  • Open communication in all directions.
  • Participation of all attendees.
  • Individual and group feedback (+) during the meeting.
  • Concrete and time-bound commitments.

It is easy to imagine that, in such an environment, the desired results are achieved. This is the case of Coaching for teams (Team Coaching). As a tool, the Business coaching is one of the The most effective available, provided that at least two conditions are met:

  • Genuine desire to improve.
  • Commitment to the process to be carried out.

Without them (and this is absolutely proven), it will not work. Coaching is a personal development method that, with the support of a coach, helps the coachee to reflect, through the formulation of questions, to raise awareness about what its objectives, competences and brakes are, and from there, map out a strategy to make the necessary changes to achieve the results you set for yourself, and commit to achieving them. Coaching is an integrated set of actions aimed at improving a person's performance so that he or she reaches his or her full potential. It consists of a professional relationship whereby the coach (trainer) helps the entrepreneur to obtain extraordinary results in life, profession, company or business; through the coaching process, the entrepreneur deepens his knowledge, increases his performance and improves his quality of life.

Coaching enhances the capacity of the individual and the organisation to learn and perform more effectively. It is a personalised, self-directed learning environment that adapts to the style and needs of the individual and the organisation. While modern coaching has a short history - about 20 years - it is nevertheless, its antecedents can be traced back to the "origins of mankind". Coaching is a discipline that draws on the best of multiple expertise and draws directly from philosophy, psychology, neuro-linguistic programming and mentoring.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF COACHING:

  • Concreteness: the technique focuses on behaviours that can be improved, in the objective and descriptive aspects of performance of what the entrepreneur intends to do.
  • Interaction: is a type of conversation in which the exchanges information and ideas with the full involvement of both parties.
  • Shared responsibility: both the coach (trainer) and the entrepreneur have a shared responsibility to work together in the continuous improvement of the proposed activity.
  • Specific form: on objective of the conversation is defined at the outset and the flow of it involves a first phase in which it is further information, and then focus on specific aspects as participants achieve the set goal.
  • Respect: a coach using this model shows the utmost respect for the person being coached at all times.

ELEMENTS OF COACHING:

  • Values: coaching is based on arguments that have been clarified from the outset among the participants. Otherwise, becomes a series of behavioural tricks or communication techniques far removed from the concept of coaching.
  • Results: is a results-oriented process. And that, in addition, it results in the continuous performance improvementeither, individual or group.
  • Discipline: is a disciplinary interaction. In order to achieve the goal of continuous improvement, a coach must be disciplined enough to create the essential conditions and manage a coaching conversation properly.
  • Training: to achieve the goal of coaching, training is needed. That is to say, intuitive knowledge or the simple memorisation of ideas and concepts is not enough.because, these functions do not guarantee that performance-oriented discussions will take place.

LIKEWISE, AMONG THE BENEFITS THAT THE ENTREPRENEUR RECEIVES THROUGH COACHING ARE THE FOLLOWING:

  • The development of its capabilities and strengths.
  • Increased efficiency.
  • Decision-making with awareness, knowledge, arguments and values.
  • Trust in oneself.
  • Daring to take risks for what is wanted.

A LITTLE HISTORY OF COACHING:

From all this knowledge, it is from Philosophy that we get the The most representative and important figure when talking about the origin of coaching. This is Socrates and his Socratic method. This philosopher's method ensured that the person to analyse his or her life and be aware of where he or she was in order to be aware of where he or she wanted to go and the resources he or she needed to do so. Socrates acknowledged his ignorance and placed knowledge in his disciples; in the same way, a coach lacks knowledge and seeks through various techniques and tools to make the coachee himself aware of and take responsibility for his current situation and of their desired situation. In this way, the coach accompanies you in this process and in the implementation of the different actions that will lead you to the achievement of your objective(s).

In addition to Socrates, have also been figures important for coaching philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. 30 years ago in the United States, the discipline of Coaching was born, with the objective or purpose of to increase the personal performance of sportsmen and women. It arises in the field of tennis, when Timothy Gallwey noticed that, when facing two opponents in equal physical conditions, one won more easily than the other. He understood that there was no need to training only the physical part, but also the "inner game" or the development of the awareness of our mind. Over the years, this methodology has been extrapolated to other areas of people's lives. However, within the business and/or work environment from where they are made greater echo of this discipline and where recourse is had to improve professional and/or personal performance.

SOME DEFINITIONS WE CAN FIND OF WHAT COACHING IS:
  • The ICF (International Coaching Federation) defines it as: "professional coaching is based on a partnership with entrepreneurs in a process of reflective and creative accompaniment that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.".
  • John Whitmore, author of Coaching for Performance, discusses an entrepreneurial concept and points out that ".is about helping someone to think for themselves, to find their answers, to discover within themselves their potential, their path to success...be it in business, personal relationships, art, sport, work......."
  • Jane Rodríguez del Tronco, in her lectures, defines coaching as: "A method of personal development that, with the support of a coach, helps the coachee to reflect, through the formulation of questions, so that he/she becomes aware of what his/her objectives, competences and brakes are, and from there, draws up a strategy to carry out the necessary changes and thus obtain the results he/she sets for him/herself, committing him/herself to achieve them.".

It is impossible to establish the foundations of coaching in a single current, area of knowledge, person... It is the product and result of a large number of sources, among which we can highlight:

  • Philosophy.
  • Psychology.
  • Leadership and management ideas.

It draws on a variety of sources, and it is in this diversity that The richness that characterises coaching as a flexible and dynamic, multidisciplinary discipline is born. evolves and adapts to the needs of both individuals and organisations, as well as to different contexts or fields of action. A bit of curious history about the origin of the term COACH. The linguistic origin of the term coach can be traced back to the 15th and 16th centuries in the Hungarian town of Kocs (between Vienna and Pest). Kocs was a regular stop for journeys between these two capitals. For this route, a carriage characterised for having certain sis suspension system, which was unusual for the time. The latter significantly increased its comfort compared to traditional carriages. Thus began talk of the kocsi szekérthe 'Kocs carriage'. Both the term and this particular suspension system were soon exported. Thus, the term kocsi switched to english as coach, al German as kutsche, at Italian as cocchio and the Spanish as a car.

Later, it came to be used to refer to the person transporting the vehicle. Thus, the coach was a driver of a horse-drawn carriage. Even today, we can still find in some dictionaries that one of the possible translations of coach, refers to a carriage driver. And more frequently, as a bus driver. Over time, it becomes a a polysemous word; with various meanings and values. It is starting to be used in different areas of sport and also in the field of learning. Placing it more in the sporting levelthe term coach came to be used for to designate fencing masters, around the 18th century. Over the years, this term began to be extended to other figures, such as dance or singing teachers.. The term began to take on a different meaning from that of teacher or professor, Only the wealthier classes could count on such services. Moreover, fencing, dancing and singing are not only physical activities but also artistic ones.

Already in the beginning of the 19th century, Some authors point out that coach was the name given by which some young people from the aristocracy called their private tutors. To use the simile of a car, it was easier to move from one course to the next with a coach. This made the word coach popular among young university students. Thus, we could begin to translate coach as a tutor, monitor, trainer, etc. The translation The most common thing that is done today, is the one that has to do with trainer. And, coaching, as indicated by the suffix- ing, refers to the act of training. In other words, coaching could literally be translated as training. Now, it was precisely in the university context that the term training (which comes from the French entrainer and is translated in English as training) began to be differentiated from coaching, as a process. Whereas the word coach (trainer) was more commonly used to designate those people whoin a generic way, helped others to prepare for a sport. The coach was more concerned with identifying the specific and individual needs of each person, even within a team.

In fact, the term coach, as from middle of the S XIXespecially in the USA and the UK, is beginning to be used more and more for the coaches or trainers of those games that are played in teams. This is the case for rowing competitions, football, baseball or basketball, to give a few examples. The curious thing is that, already in the 20th century, Tim GallweyThe study, recognised as one of the fathers of coaching, did not begin with the behaviour of successful coaches in team games, but rather in more individual sports such as tennis, skiing or golf. It took a few decades, as it was not until the end of the 20th century, when the Tim Gallwey (through works such as The Inner Game of Tennis 1974) and, very significantly, John Whitmore (who popularises the term, within companies, by means of different training courses given to large companies such as IBM, etc. and that he would extend it to other areas through his bestseller "Coaching for performance begin to give coaching a structure and a theoretical body of its own.
