Although the entrepreneurial ecosystem is growing stronger by the day, there is still a need to increase the presence of female talent. The latest GEM Global Report states that only six countries in the world have similar rates of entrepreneurship between men and women.
The imbalance in the startup ecosystem due to the greater presence of men compared to women (80% vs 20%) is a reality that we must all work together to change. In the last year, the presence of women has increased in sectors such as Ecommerce, Tourism, Agrotech and Energy. However, in others, such as Fintech, the presence of female entrepreneurs has decreased.
For the sixth consecutive year, Spain leads the European parity ranking, with 9 women entrepreneurs for every 10 men, a figure that exceeds the European average, where there are only 6 women for every 10 men entrepreneurs.
The United Nations' global Sustainable Development Goals, which include gender equality among their priorities, have awakened women's interest in this way of participating in the economy and work.
The % of women-created enterprises is up (in the 1990s it was only 15%).
Reason
- Difficulty of access to the labour market.
- Self-employment, mastery of the timetable.
According to GEM Spain In 2020 female entrepreneurs maintain a more conservative profile than men. They perceive fewer opportunities (14.4%), are more afraid of failure (54%) and rate the entrepreneurial culture in their environment less favourably.
The female OER suffers more in this year of crisis and slows down its upward trend.
- For OER initiatives, the motivation to create wealth or a very high income is less pronounced for women than for men (27.61 PTP3T compared to 411 PTP3T).
Women and men undertake to the same extent when they do so to continue a family tradition.
Women aged 35-44 are more entrepreneurial than men in the same age group. In the 55-64 age bracket, on the other hand, less so than men.
- Women's enterprises related to high and medium-tech sectors represent around 50% of men's enterprises related to these sectors, either in start-up phase of up to three and a half years, or in established enterprises.
- Over the last 12 months, employment creation of up to 5 workers has occurred in 9.51 PTP3T of women's initiatives compared to 14.81 PTP3T of men's initiatives.
Women generally have more transversal competences such as emotional intelligence, empathy, communication, teamwork, involving and engaging the team, are more practical and more concrete. In a meeting they don't waste time talking about, for example, football or bullfighting, even if they like it, they get down to business because they often have to manage their time very well in order to reconcile work and family life.
At the institutional level, the Spanish government has only committed to promoting strategic entrepreneurship, self-employment, talent management, regulatory frameworks, financing, innovation and digitalisation, sustainability and internationalisation, as well as female entrepreneurship as an essential part of the ecosystem.
Meanwhile, within the entrepreneurial world itself, it is increasingly common to see certain programmes aimed at women. This is the case of EIT Food, which is developing Empowering Women in Agrifood (EWA) to make female leadership more visible in areas such as agrifood, "first of all, we need to give women the opportunity to exercise that leadership.
From there, they are demonstrating that they have the necessary preparation and also an interest in contributing new ideas". And they add that, in the initial stages of their work, "it is important to share experiences".
