PERCEPTION BIASES OF MENTORS
It is essential for the mentor to know his or her biases!!! We have seen how important it is to be aware of our distortions and mistaken beliefs in order to maturing personally and living a meaningful life.
In addition, it is essential for the mentor to be aware of his or her own biases for several reasons
- Avoiding prejudice about the entrepreneur who hinder empathy and may even negatively influence their development.
- To be in a better position to know, understand and support the entrepreneur, avoiding errors arising from possible projections of one's own beliefs, motives and personality traits.
- Help your entrepreneur to avoiding bias to see with greater clarity and breaking out of commonplaces of thought.
What can you do to neutralise the effect of your biases as a mentor? What can we do then?
Self-awareness: watch yourself, listen to yourself.
Deepen our self-awareness, identify our perceptual biases, be alert to detect them when they arise, do a reality check, consult with a friend or another coach and correct our bias. Secondly, since, we cannot be 100% sure of our objectivity, choose positive biases. Optimistic bias is the tendency to be overly optimistic about the benefits of our actions.
- Become aware of who you are: beliefs, emotions...
- Work on your intrapersonal emotional intelligence.
- Question your beliefs and paradigms.
- Self-manage your emotions.
After the question and before think of yourself.
