We note
The entrepreneur shows himself to be distracted, agitated, or simply not yet disconnected from the issues that have occupied you during the day or what you have left to do.
For example, when you arrive late to the session because of a traffic jam, you have had unpleasant news, you have had a conflict that day, or because a loud noise (aeroplane, etc.) invades the conversation. We can also observe the same in us as a coach/mentor.
During the session, the entrepreneur goes into lengthy explanations.
Objective:
Helping the entrepreneur to free yourself from distractions that interfere with attention to the subject of the session, in order to be able to focus, connecting with yourself and your coach/mentor in the present moment.
Phases:
This technique is particularly useful in the starting a sessionwhen the entrepreneur and the coach/mentor have just arrived. But can be applied at any other time, when we notice a lack of presence or connection to the "here and now".
Techniques and tools:
VENTILATE:
Invite the entrepreneur to tell briefly what is happening to you, for recognise their current status and "get some frustration out of your system" that is not the subject of the session (e.g. traffic). It is important to spend only a short time to ventilate and, which is recognise it as a way to become more prepared for the work of the session.
BREATHE:
Invite the entrepreneur to take some deep breathing or guided breathing exercises.
Example:
- Coach: "How are you?"
- Entrepreneur: "I'm a bit agitated, nervous, I've just been fined, but come on, I didn't come here to talk about this".
- Coach: "Shall we take a few deep breaths together to relax a bit?"
- entrepreneur: "ok".
- *Breathes
- Coach: "now how do you feel...?"
BECOMING AWARE OF THE BODY:
The body is the way in which we are present in this world, However, not always paying much attention to their signals and, in a coaching/mentoring context, These can provide interesting information to the entrepreneur.
To bring the attention down from our head or thoughts and into the body, we can ask questions such as:
- How is your body, do you feel any tension?
- I see you move your arms like this; what's wrong?
- I notice that you are breathing very heavily. What do you feel?
RELAXATION:
Invite the entrepreneur to perform a guided relaxation exercise, to reduce physical and mental tension, and to enter into a state of greater serenity from which you can explore your situation or challenge.
