HOW TO OVERCOME THE OBSTACLES OF NEGATIVE EMOTIONS THAT AFFECT ENTREPRENEURSHIP

More and more of us are embarking on the great adventure of entrepreneurship, whether out of necessity for the changing times or because of something much more passionate, we know we have something to contribute to this world and we set about it, and like someone who gives birth to a child: without an emotional instruction book, which is a cocktail by the way.

On the one hand, we have great enthusiasm, courage, desire and even certain fears, emotions that help us in our project. On the other hand, many mixed feelings arise, sometimes new, sometimes suddenly uncovered, hidden since childhood: feelings of insecurity, fear of failure, anger, frustration, loneliness, negative stress, anxiety, discouragement, etc.

All these emotional ingredients, put into a pressure cooker that, if not managed properly, can explode at the worst possible moment. An important fact: The most important resource is in yourself, not money, not time, not the politician of the day.

In this TIP I want you to get to know the blocking emotions that are most commonly seen in consultation, and how to deal with them, and I have divided them into 4 blocks:

BLOCKS

  • Most of them are associated with fear underlying: insecurities, uncertainties, fear of exposure, fear of failure, vertigo, excessive worry that turns into anguish and anxiety, risk aversion, getting out of the comfort zone .....
  • Others have their origins more in sadnesssuch as loneliness, discouragement, disappointment....
  • Very common emotions resulting from angerwhen things don't go the way you want them to go, anger with others or with yourself, frustration, anger, guilt...
  • Finally, the famous saturation of too many activities, too much information or too little experience.

STEPS TO UNLOCK IN ENTREPRENEURS:

Yes first we know how it works our organism, in general, y emotions we will be able to move on to further management healthy and constructive We can move forward with our project in the most efficient and exciting way.

The most important thing is to know that, absolutely all emotions are ours, we make them ourselves, whether we like to assume it or not, and It is in our hands to learn from them and change them. Our thoughts precede and build upon them. Generally, we have automatic and negative thoughts (remember that for thousands of years thinking only in terms of risk has saved our lives by protecting us from external threats, and that is in our genes).

So if we take the time to find out what kind of thoughts we have and transform them into more helpful ones (which we can), our emotions will go that way too!!!

  • How to do it?

Placing the focusThe focus is on the opportunity rather than the problem, more in what we gain than in what we lose every time there are changes, more on our virtues and achievements than on our failures, more on rationalising REAL risk and differentiating it from imaginary psychological fear (a curious fact is that human beings are the only beings on earth that continue to fear even when danger is not in front of them). Where we put our focus, we put our energy.And if we force ourselves at the beginning to think in that direction, it will eventually become more unconscious.

Every emotionWe accept it, observe it and analyse what it wants to tell us, has a meaning and a message. Knowing about them will help us to see their origin in order to be able to manage better. I will talk about each one separately so that you can identify them in yourself and they can help you in each case.

CONTINUING WITH SELF-KNOWLEDGE, ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ABOUT YOURSELF: 

  • What am I like? 
  • Do I tend towards impatience, impulsiveness, I want results NOW!!! or do I tend more towards serenity, calmness...?
  • Am I more flexible, or fixed in my ideas?
  • Do I need to be in control of everything? Am I a perfectionist?
  • Do I have a hard time making decisions?
  • Do I trust others, do I trust life, do I trust myself?
  • Do I tend to turn everything over in my head or can I switch off easily?
  • What stressors affect me the most?
  • What do I think is holding me back now, and at other times, does the pattern repeat itself?

Knowing yourself in these aspects is crucial to know what our belief systems are and how you are going to react to unforeseen changes, adversities, failures... What they are always there and will always be there so that we do not fall asleep and continue to grow and move forward.

EMOTIONS RELATED TO FEAR IN THE ENTREPRENEUR:

This emotion is the subject of a separate talk (see tip on fear in entrepreneurship and webinar on it). All fears warn us that "something in the future is going to hurt us" and leave us with the message "be prepared". So our body prepares itself, either to cope, or to freeze, or to run away, releasing cortisol and adrenaline, pumping the heart...

The most common one I see in consultation is the fear of changeto get out of the comfort zone, of those who are clear that they want to change their lives and realise their project, They are masters of their lives, but they are comfortable in their golden cage, whose bars are anchors to the past, fears of the future, insecurities about their own abilities. It's just a matter of liberating, breaking down those bars with courage, self-love, knowledge of one's own abilities. Se only real change occurs when more value is placed on the positive consequences of getting out of the cage than on the pain of jumping out of it.

  • What if I fail?

is also a very frequent question. We have to assume error as a necessary variable that is only there to help you improve.

There are cultures that encourage it much more than ours, and in this we have to change a lot, starting with ourselves and encouraging others that we can launch projects that are not "perfect".

The feeling of uncertaintyThe question of what is going to happen is something that haunts us as well, and leads us to a situation of constant alertness. It is related to the lack of controlespecially at the beginning. Our brain, which tends to do as little work as possible, sees the unknown as threatening and blocks us.

  • How to combat it?

Well, with our other great ally (and don't call me romantic) the heart. If we put passion into what we really believe in, skills will emerge in us that seemed hidden under fear but are waiting for us: creativity, innovation, flexibility that helps us to adapt and think constructively, empathy with others.....

For all this, don't forget then what your purpose is, what you want to do deeply. "When priorities are clear, decisions become easy" (anonymous), because you know that any setback will be temporary, and if you manage to analyse from another perspective it will help you to achieve your project.

ASK YOURSELF ABOUT ANY FEAR THAT MAY ARISE:

What's the worst that can happen? This always works, especially for people who are afraid to expose themselves and go blank.

Is the lion so big, is there a lion? If you analyse it, you will see that the consequences are not so drastic and that the fear gradually disappears.

Stress and anxiety They deserve a separate chapter. Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more of them, and they are a reason for emergency consultations because fear has literally entered our bodies.

The call amygdala sequestration goes beyond our control and plays tricks on us, creates a warning system that distorts reality and makes us focus on the threatening and the negative. It makes us believe that by controlling everything we protect ourselves, when the opposite is true, we cannot change what is not in our controlBy diverting attention away from our inner confidence, it weakens us further.

  • WHAT TO DO?

The key is analyse how real the threat isand above all to find the congruence between our emotions, thoughts and actions and words. It is the principle of coherence, that all go along the same lines. For this it is important to connect with the sensations of the body, and to feel that it is a safe place to go to whenever we need it. Hence, the importance of the meditationmindfulness (feeling our here and now, not being overwhelmed by our past or our future), connecting with nature, physical exercise, and good nutrition. 

There is an outline of the method of 7 steps that I carry out in 3 sessions for people who have some kind of fear when it comes to entrepreneurship.

SCHEME

EMOTIONS RELATED TO SADNESS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The sadness is a high-frequency emotion that indicates the loss of something or someone, it is necessary to analyse what that loss has been, and I am not only referring to the material or the external. I remember a young man who came to the consultation totally demotivated because the great project of his life was not being carried out, he lost the illusion and the strength to continue fighting, and this also generalised to all areas of his life.

In this case there was a basic limiting belief that was installed when he was a child that he was not able to solve his problems and when the first obstacle arose, this emotion was uncovered. Asking for help was very good for him because he discovered and felt the genesis of his problem and gave it a new meaning. "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

DiscouragementThe disappointment with oneself is associated with a vital fatigue that prevents us from making decisions, that paralyses us. It is cushioned by promoting inner strength. That is why it is so important to know ourselves, to be able to overcome the obstacles we encounter along the way and to value our abilities. Congratulate ourselves on our achievements that we have, however small they may be, because we are very good at picking out our own faults and only seeing the good in others.

Surround yourself with positive people, cultivate good relationships, share your feelings, choose partners you can trust and stay away from negative people who, as Einstein said, "are not good people. "They always find a problem for every solution". Establish supportive relationships within and outside the family, accept that change is part of life and that failures are not failures but opportunities for improvement.

NEVER FORGET OUR PURPOSE AS WE HAVE SEEN BEFORE AND ALWAYS ASK OURSELVES CONSTRUCTIVELY WHEN WE HAVE DONE SOMETHING:

  • What went well?
  • What can be improved?
  • What have I learned from this?

It helps to avoid situations of discouragement and sadness.

LonelinessThis may be the result of having been immersed in our projects, often leaving friends and family out of our context because they did not understand the subject or, worse, did not support it or trust it. It involves feeling disconnected from othersSo the way to stop feeling it is to do our best to reconnect, to join groups of people who are in the same situation as us.

It is important to find a balance between personal and professional life, scheduling time away from work to spend with friends and family. Collaborate with other entrepreneurs, create your network of regular collaborators by attending events in your sector, share generously and contribute. There is no greater pleasure than sharing your experiences in a selfless way and being able to help other people, the gratitude is immense on both sides.

EMOTIONS RELATED TO ANGER

The excitement of the anger comes out when we feel aggrieved, when a rule of ours has been broken or an injustice is perceived. Analysing what it is that has been broken, whether we need to review our own rules because they may be excessive or unrealistic, is key to being able to manage anger well. The frustration appears when the anger is sustained over time, It blocks us and saps our energy, because we know we can do better and make new decisions. Again, to know oneself so that in risky situations we do not reach this state, to analyse the situation and put it in context.

Failure to comply with a standard or value can lead to the guiltBecause looking for someone to blame, such as oneself, is the easiest way to eliminate frustration. It is important to work on the acceptance and, in many cases, self-forgiveness, reviewing our values and our standards to achieve them.

And, last but not least, THE EMOTION OF SATURATION

The "I can't take it anymore", "I'm overwhelmed", "I'm in over my head", "I'm in over my head". It occurs when there is overload of activities to do, of information to read, of decisions to make... again the body talks to us and if we don't listen to him we can get sick by raising cortisol, lowering defences...

Here it would be interesting to learn to delegate, we sometimes believe that who better than me can do it better than me. We should also make a template where we put in blocks what is really urgent, what is really important, what is both, or neither one nor the other, and assign time to each block.

WHAT SHOULD WE FOCUS ON?

At "Having the courage of being able to change what really depends on us, the serenity to accept what is not, and the wisdom to be able to distinguish them. Finally, I will never stop advising moments to find oneself, through simple meditation, walks in nature, physical exercise and healthy eating, of course we have to make an effort and schedule this because we feel that we do not have time for what we do not want to do, but we do not have time for it. MOST IMPORTANT... OUR HEALTH!
