REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND QUALITIES TO BE A GOOD MENTOR

In order to understand the requirements for being a good mentor, it is important to start by stressing that a mentor is made, not born, i.e. you can learn to be a good mentor. The minimum requirements to be a mentor are very easy to comply with, since, we can always find the right entrepreneur for every mentor... all mentors are different and so are all entrepreneurs. A good matching process (+) makes the requirements or skills demanded of a mentor much lower or easier to meet.

The basic requirements to be a mentor are: to be an entrepreneur or manager, professional, or teacher with extensive experience, i.e. to accumulate knowledge and experience, and to have an interest in sharing it.

Have knowledge or experience to add value in a typical business area: marketing, sales, exports, management, finance, accounting, administration, strategy, production and distribution, human resources, regulatory issues, technology, leadership, team management, conflict management... the list is very, very long, but the mentor only needs to master one of them.

An entrepreneur mentor is a person who is responsible for guiding, advising and sharing their experience and knowledge with entrepreneurs to help them achieve their professional and personal goals. Being a good mentor is not something that is achieved overnight, but requires certain skills, knowledge and attitudes that allow the mentor to establish a trusting relationship with the entrepreneur and guide him or her effectively.

The following are the requirements that an entrepreneur mentor must meet

  • Experience and knowledge in the business area: A good mentor should have experience and knowledge in the business area to be able to add value and guide the entrepreneur in his or her growth process. It is important that the mentor has experience in the sector in which the entrepreneur is working, as this will allow him/her to better understand the needs and challenges that arise.
  • Time availability: The mentor must be willing to devote time and effort to guide the entrepreneur. He or she should be available to meet with the entrepreneur on a regular basis, either in person or through virtual means, to ensure that he or she is getting the support he or she needs.
  • Empathy and emotional skills: A good mentor must have emotional skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence and active listening skills. The mentor must be able to understand the entrepreneur's emotions, motivations and needs in order to guide them effectively.
  • Professionalism: The mentor should be a role model in terms of professionalism and ethics. He/she must be able to transmit positive, ethical and consistent values, and be respectful and tolerant of the entrepreneur's opinions and decisions.
  • Communication skills: The mentor must have effective communication skills to be able to convey his or her knowledge and experience to the entrepreneur in a clear and concise manner. They must be able to listen and ask effective questions in order to understand the entrepreneur's needs and guide them effectively.
  • Patience and flexibility: The mentor must be patient and flexible, as the entrepreneur may have different learning paces and needs. The mentor must be able to adapt to the entrepreneur's needs and be willing to change the guidance strategy if necessary.
  • Desire to help: A good mentor must have a genuine desire to help and share his or her knowledge and experience. He/she must be able to support the entrepreneur in his/her growth and development process and be committed to his/her success.

In conclusion, a good mentor for entrepreneurs must have experience and knowledge in the business area, availability of time, effective emotional and communication skills, professionalism, patience, flexibility and a real desire to help.

All these requirements are fundamental to establish a relationship of trust with the entrepreneur and to guide him effectively in his growth process.

INDISPENSABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Wanting to help, on a voluntary basis, by sharing your experiences and knowledge with an entrepreneur.
  • Be entrepreneurs, professionals, managers or teachers.
  • Sufficient time availability (>1.5 hours per month, as a minimum). At least once a month.
  • Have completed the mentoring workshop.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (NOT ESSENTIAL)

  • Be in ACTIVE employment.
  • With entrepreneurial experience.
  • Higher education, which may be replaced by years of experience.
  • You can be of any age and resident anywhere in the world.

To be a good mentor for entrepreneurs, there are certain requirements that are essential and others that are preferable but not indispensable.

Firstly, it is essential that the mentor has the desire to voluntarily help the entrepreneurs, sharing his or her knowledge and experience with them. This desire must be genuine and motivated by the intention to contribute to the success of the entrepreneurs and their business.

In addition, it is necessary that the mentor has a business, professional or managerial profile, or is a teacher. This is because the mentor must have experience in the business world in order to be able to properly advise and guide the entrepreneur on his or her path to success.

Another important requirement is that the mentor has enough time available to dedicate at least 1.5 hours per month to the mentoring process. This implies that the mentor must have a committed and responsible attitude, in order to be able to comply with the scheduled meetings with the entrepreneur and maintain fluid communication with him/her.

It is essential that the mentor has received specific training in mentoring, such as a mentoring workshop, in order to be prepared and to know the tools and techniques necessary to guide the entrepreneur effectively.

On the other hand, although these are not essential requirements, it is preferable for the mentor to be professionally active, as this allows them to be up-to-date in their field of expertise and offer advice that is more in line with current market needs. Likewise, having entrepreneurial experience is an advantage as the mentor can better understand the difficulties and challenges faced by the entrepreneur on his or her path to success.

Finally, although higher education is not a prerequisite, it is preferable for the mentor to have a solid background that can be substituted by years of experience. This will allow him/her to offer a deeper and more detailed knowledge of the subject matter in which he/she is an expert.

In a nutshell, the essential requirements to be a good mentor for entrepreneurs are: want to help, have an entrepreneurial profile, have sufficient time available, and have received training in mentoring.

In addition, it is preferable to be professionally active, to have entrepreneurial experience, to have a solid education, and to have a committed and responsible attitude. All these requirements together can make a mentor highly effective and can significantly help entrepreneurs to succeed.

Cognitive skills are important for success, but they are not enough on their own. Analytical and conceptual thinking are necessary skills for problem solving and decision making. However, social and personal management skills are also important for building effective relationships and getting the best out of ourselves.

Social competences focus on affiliation and help us to relate to others on the same level. Empathy, teamwork and customer orientation are important skills for building effective relationships and collaborating with others.

Personal management competencies focus on achievement and enable us to get the best out of ourselves. Self-confidence, commitment, results orientation, integrity and flexibility are important skills for setting goals and working to achieve them.

Finally, managerial competencies enable us to exert positive influence from a leadership position and arise from the social power motive. Change management, influence and leadership are important skills for motivating and leading others.

TO BE AN EXCELLENT MENTOR, IT IS NECESSARY TO DEVELOP COMPETENCIES IN ALL THREE AREAS:
  • Personal maturity
  • Empathy
  • Influence.

It is important to initiate a process of personal preparation that involves knowing oneself, developing oneself, knowing others and developing others. This will enable the mentor to have a holistic and effective approach to the mentoring process.

I would add listening and curiosity, to go further. I don't know if this is specific to a mentor, but it is essential to bring out the best in an entrepreneur.

  2. José Luis Prieto Calviño

In addition to setting challenges for the entrepreneur, I believe that one of the skills of a good mentor is to know how to ask questions. Another aspect that the mentor must be able to understand is the evolution of the environment, the experiences acquired were acquired under conditions that have almost certainly evolved, so it is important to lead the mentee to "squeeze these" to get the current and fresh juice out of them.

  3. Pedro carranza

I loved the self-assessment questionnaire because active listening is what I find most difficult.
And I would like to take this opportunity to greet Jose Luis Prieto, fellow investor in startups ¡¡¡¡
    A hug to all mentors
    Carmen

  5. Ángel González Palenzuela

There are many memorable phrases here and I find the self-evaluation, like Carmen, very useful. But do we have to have so many capacities...! Do we have to be superwomen and supermen?
Well, not so much, the main thing is humility and openness. And the best learning, practice.

  6. Oswaldo

I am fascinated by this world and I would like to be part of these lies.
