RESILIENCE

It can be defined as the ability of people to overcome periods of emotional pain and adverse situations, emerging stronger from them, i.e. knowing how to face adversity constructively or knowing how to adapt flexibly to each situation.

We all have the capacity to overcome adverse stimuli, but it is the determined and firm use of this capacity that makes us truly resilient.

Emerging stronger from adverse situations may mean that in the future, when faced with a situation that arouses the same feelings of frustration, sadness, anger or despair, we can react differently, write a story with a different ending.

The positive part is that this capacity is in each one of us. We all have at our disposal this "magic tool" that helps us to stand up every day and grow in the face of adversity. However, we don't always choose to use it!!!

Some people find it harder than others. This is not to say that resilient people don't find things painful or upsetting - not at all! Rather, it is a question of attitude.

Here are 8 qualities or attributes of the resilient person

Self-knowledge and self-esteem

Knowing one's main strengths and abilities, as well as limitations and weaknesses, is one of the characteristics of resilient people. In addition to knowing themselves, they recognise the importance of teamwork and know how to ask for help when they need it.

Empathy

The ability to understand others and put ourselves in their shoes, to understand their feelings by understanding our own. It is a resilient habit, which allows us, for example, to separate thought from action when we feel angry with someone we love.

Autonomy

The belief that we can influence what happens around us, losing the fear that things happen because of injustice or causes beyond our control. This will strengthen our self-esteem and mobilise us to resolve conflicts that would otherwise become chronic over time.

Facing adversity

Facing adversity with humour is typical of resilient people. Being able to laugh at adversity and make a joke out of difficult situations helps us to overcome them and remain strong and optimistic in the face of uncertainty.

Awareness of the present and optimism

The most resilient people have the habit of living in the here and now, the present, without the guilt of yesterday or the uncertainty of the future clouding the moment they are experiencing. They enjoy the small details and do not lose their ability to be amazed by life.

Flexibility combined with perseverance

The existence of a meaningful purpose in life is another characteristic of a resilient person. This goal gives them the inner strength to take responsibility for pursuing it, with flexibility and without obstinacy.

Sociability

Resilient people know how to cultivate and value their friendships. They usually surround themselves with people who have a positive outlook on life. In this way, they manage to create a strong support network, which can sustain them in the most difficult moments.

Tolerance of frustration and uncertainty

One of the main sources of tension and stress is the desire to want to control all aspects of our lives, because we tend to tolerate uncertainty badly. One way to gain self-confidence and live with less emotional tension is precisely by learning to deal with uncertainty, so that it causes us as little discomfort as possible.
