Entrepreneurs learn from mistakes and failures, and so do mentors. Learning is not free. Our self-esteem suffers when we have to deal with the inconsistency between our words and our actions. 

Cognitive dissonance' explains the anxiety we feel when two contradictory beliefs or behaviour conflicts with our values. We are motivated to reduce that dissonance by changing one of our beliefs or behaviour. 

  • For example: if we persist in smoking, we will tell ourselves that it is not as bad as it is made out to be.

Another example, would be how difficult it is to recognise that we have made a mistake when making a purchase or enrolling in a course that has required a significant outlay.

For protecting our self-image We develop defences that make it difficult for us to learn. Thus, we blame others, we assert ourselves in our preconceived ideas or rationalise our failures, giving plausible, coherent but false explanations.

What leads us to persist in error?

Ignoring mistakes or blaming them on others is a self-reinforcing behaviour, so that the more time passes, the more difficult it becomes to turn back.

Learning is not always positive. We have also learned, unconsciously, the assumptions, beliefs, defensive routines and behaviours that set us up for failure.

Unlearning, therefore, is key to acquiring more effective thinking and behavioural habits.

The following story illustrates this point:

A Zen master received a university professor who came to visit him to learn the secrets of Zen. When he arrived, he introduced himself to the teacher by telling him about all the qualifications he had obtained, the lessons he had learnt in his years of study, the books he had read...

The teacher offered him a cup of tea. When the cup was full, the master kept pouring. The teacher see The tea was spilling out and he started to scream:

  • Master, can't you see that the cup is completely full, it won't fit a drop more!
  • Ah, you are very observant," replied the master. Well, it's the same with you as with the cup. You are full of opinions and certainties. If you don't empty your head first, you won't be able to learn anything I could teach you.

Learning from mistakes and failures is a fundamental part of the growth and development of entrepreneurs.

THE REASONS WHY AND HOW ENTREPRENEURS CAN LEARN FROM THESE EXPERIENCES ARE EXPLAINED IN DETAIL BELOW.
