WHY IS IT SO EFFECTIVE? HOW CAN I GET STARTED?

More and more we hear how important meditation is for EVERYTHING, how it helps us to not only relax and lower our level of stress and anxiety We need to be able to not only calm our minds, but also to focus more and better, flow more, be more creative and productive, improves the memory, the attention span and concentration, reduces the risk of diseases such as depression, lowers blood pressure and even pain...

And what could be more important than achieving all this above when we are undertaking? with all the uncertainty and roller coaster (+) of emotions involved, sleepless nights, hours and hours dedicated to our project, saturation of information about what we have to do and learn, fears and ghosts of ours that arise and that we were unaware of?

But... what have I noticed when I follow up with my clients? They tell me:

"Euge, I'm very well now, but meditating is not my thing, I even get more nervous, I'm not good for this...".

So I've started to study the subject in depth and I'm delighted because the Neuroscience of meditation has given me the explanation of what really happens in the brain, especially at the beginning when we are learning meditation, which not only prevents us from enjoying all the benefits of meditation, but also conditions us to abandon it and makes us despair.

In this article I would like to convince you that meditation is extremely usefulBut I want you to do it right, I want you to know that it is much simpler than you think, that you have to be patient to see results and that it is about training the mind as you train a muscle in the gym.

Unlike the classical passive meditation which can be more difficult for us and places more emphasis on controlling the mind and requires a certain posture and a lot of concentration, the active meditation developed by the Hindu Oshlo is much simpler. In it the focus is on the breath; only by connecting with the inhalation and exhalation we are connecting with ourselves. And as I always say in talks and workshops: we have a great inner world and potential to discover if we know how. Meditation is a beastly ally for this!!!!

We manage to integrate body, mind and spirit, thinking less and feeling more, which is extremely important and, tremendously, liberating. And here is the crux of the matter, because it is very difficult to "stop thinking", thoughts come to us immediately and when we realise this, two things can happen:

  • What we do when we are apprentices: bufff, I'm getting distracted again.
time, what a drag, how long I've been like this, I get angry with myself-o, let's see if
I concentrate again on my breathing as they say...
  • What experts do: I recognise that thoughts come, I accept them,
I observe, and let them pass like clouds in the sky without getting involved in them. I concentrate again on my breathing, how the air enters and leaves at different temperatures in my nostrils, or I concentrate on how my stomach rises and falls, or my lung capacity...

WHAT IT ALL LOOKS LIKE IN NEUROIMAGING

With the practice of meditation, the brain begins to reorganise itself and undergoes functional and anatomical changes (some areas grow and others shrink).

  1. From the very beginning, when we concentrate when we start meditating and focus on the breath, only the dorsolateral cortex is activated, the rest of the brain being neuronally silent.
  2. Then we get distracted, there is like an inner dialogue with daydreams.
spontaneous and fleeting, which are neither conscious nor voluntary.
  3. When we become aware of the distraction, the cingulate cortex and insula are activated. If I get angry, it will stop doing so, it will stop warning us that we have been distracted. On the other hand, if I thank it for its function, with an inner smile, the mechanism is reinforced and it will warn us earlier and earlier and we will move on to phase 4.
  4. We return our attention to the breath, back to the neural silence of almost the entire brain and back to square one.

With practice, steps 1 to 4 will become quicker and more rewarding, it is a "realising realisation of realisation", And this is how we train and achieve all the benefits we already know about meditation and the connection with our inner self, greatly increasing our sense of well-being. It is known that a wandering mind is an unhappy mind, a mind that wastes energy with busy states.

Our mind is not designed to be all the time in alert mode, with stress, saturation, mental noise; with meditation and mindfulness we help to activate our mental state. parasympathetic system It is from calmness that we find the best solutions, clarifying ideas and making good decisions, which are so important, especially in times of uncertainty.

HOW CAN I START THEN?

Now that you know the great advantages of meditating and what to do to enjoy it without getting angry, I suggest that you put on some helmets (I recommend meditations with binaural music), comfortable position but not too much so that you don't fall asleep (mind you, it's better to fall asleep than not to meditate, it happens to me a lot), and to put on some guided meditation that you can find on the internet or in apps on your devices.

The theme is very varied, you will find the ones that resonate with you and the ones you need at any given moment: to reduce anxiety, build confidence, muscle relaxation, even to reduce pain. Contact me if you want more information, I have even designed several for people who do not believe in meditation or in their own abilities.

Remember to pay attention to your breath, smile internally when you realise you have been distracted by thoughts, and refocus on the here and now and your breath... the magic happens by itself. Little by little you will realise that you will be able to practice it even when you are doing another exercise, harmonising everything everywhere.

BUT I DON'T HAVE TIME!!! WHEN DO I DO IT?

We want to do things well and not fail, we believe that working non-stop will make things easier for us (see article on emotions in the entrepreneur, I talk about fears, beliefs, perfectionism, loop thoughts, paralysis by analysis...).

To show you how important it is to stop and disconnect from external noise and connect with your inner self, I recommend that you read the tale of Sharpening the Axe used by Stephen Covey in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People", where a lumberjack could not understand how, no matter how hard he tried, he cut less trees every day, if he did not even have time to sharpen his axe.

Sometimes, we don't realise that, we are not that productive, we are giving our all but we get saturated, we don't flow, we are obsessed in one direction and with one focus. That is why it is important to stop, look at things from a different perspective and readjust where necessary. It is then that we begin to appreciate details that we did not see with the previous approach.

Remember that your best working tool is yourself. Schedule a moment of disconnection from the outside to connect with yourself inwards. At lunchtime, for example, start with listening to simple 15-minute meditations and you will see how your creativity and ability to decide and solve problems one by one will start to develop much more.
