What is mentoring for entrepreneurs?

WHAT IS MENTORING FOR ENTREPRENEURS?

Mentoring for entrepreneurs is a process in which an entrepreneur with experience and expertise in a specific area (the mentor) offers guidance and advice to another entrepreneur who is starting out or needs help in a particular area. The mentor provides guidance, knowledge and experience in areas such as strategic planning, product development, marketing, finance and time management.

At mentorDay, the mentor specialist reviews the deliverable (+) corresponding to their area of expertise

The objective of mentoring is helping entrepreneurs to achieve their business goals, improve their performance and increase their chances of success. Through the mentoring process, the entrepreneur is able to learn from the mentor's experience and mistakes, and receive personalised advice and real-time guidance to overcome specific business challenges.

Mentoring for entrepreneurs is an increasingly common practice and can be very valuable for those seeking guidance and support on their entrepreneurial journey.

Mentoring involves a relationship of trust and mutual learning, in which an experienced mentor shares his or her knowledge and skills with a mentee who is seeking to develop personally or professionally. It is a valuable tool for growth and success in business and other areas of life.

The mentoring for entrepreneurs that we practice at mentorDay is a methodology of accompaniment based on experience to help entrepreneurs simultaneously to:

  • Developing your personal skills (see +).
  • Start and grow your business, accelerate your business.

It is a programme aimed at entrepreneurs, through which support is provided by a mentor (+) experienced entrepreneur or professional, for a period of 6-12 months, in order to take advantage of an important part of the mentors' business knowledge capital, thus facilitating the exchange of experiences.

We understand mentoring as the act of helping another to learn, so that in the same act, the one who teaches learns and the one who learns induces the one who teaches to reflect. This creates a virtuous cycle of learning!

MORE DEFINITIONS THAT CAN HELP YOU UNDERSTAND MENTORING

  • Mentoring is the process by which a member of a more experienced company or external professional (the mentor) andnstructs, advises, guides and assists others (the mentee) in its development, investing time and knowledge.
  • Mentoring is a methodology for interpersonal learning.

The mentor is a person with extensive experience and knowledge in the area to be improved, who helps a mentee in his or her professional development or a company to meet its future goals.

It is in ancient Greece where the word mentoring has its origin, specifically the Greek poet Homer in his book The Odyssey, tells the story that when Ulysses left for the Trojan War, he entrusted Mentor with the care of his home and the education of his son Telemachus.

After the war was over, under the auspices of Mentor, Telemachus learned to fend for himself in order to successfully complete his task of searching for his father. Nowadays, the term Mentor refers to anyone who acts as an advisor, guide or tutor.

A FEW MORE DEFINITIONS CAN HELP US TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT MENTORING IS:

"Mentoring is about developing, nurturing, sharing and helping in a relationship in which one person invests time, know-how and effort to enhance the development of another person, in the area of knowledge and skills, and to respond to critical needs in that person's life in directions that prepare the individual for greater productivity or success in the future. (Gordon F. Shea. Mentoring: Helping Employees Reach Their Full Potential, 1994, 13)

"Mentoring is the offering of advice, information or guidance by a person who has experience and skills for the benefit of another person's personal and professional development". (Coaching and Mentoring: How to Develop Top Talent and Achieve Better Results, from the Harvard Business Essentials collection).

COACHING AND MENTORING: HOW TO DEVELOP TOP TALENT AND ACHIEVE BETTER RESULTS, FROM THE HARVARD BUSINESS ESSENTIALS COLLECTION

There are many others types of mentoring depending on the person being accompanied and the objectives pursued. Mentoring is a methodology of personalised accompaniment, in which business people share their experience with entrepreneurs with the aim of helping them to develop their skills in order to consolidate and grow their businesses.

On the other hand, it is a learning relationship between two people that requires trust, commitment and a strong emotional bond between the two.

I agree with the bases set out in the TIP to define the work of a mentor as they coincide with my point of view on it and it is also what drives me to carry out this mentoring work. My experiences in the world of quality and innovation, terms that have been and are being overused in recent years and that have led to a certain lack of virtualisation, as this is also happening to entrepreneurs and mentors. That is why clearly pointing out these bases as they are cited here is a fundamental first step. Thank you
