EMCC: European Coaching and Mentoring Council

EMCC: EUROPEAN COACHING AND MENTORING COUNCIL

EMCC is Europe's largest coaching, mentoring and supervision organisation. Its purpose is "to develop and promote best practice in Mentoring, Coaching and Supervision worldwide for the benefit of society".

The organisation has its roots in 1992, with the founding of EMC, the European Mentoring Centre, an initiative of David Clutterbuck and David Megginson in the UK. In 2002, EMC became EMCC, with the two previous founders together with three other heavyweights from the coaching/mentoring world: Sir John Withmore, Julie Hay and Erick Parsloe.

Currently, it has affiliated offices in 24 countries, has more than 6,000 members, more than 1900 certified partners from 61 countries, be it in Coaching, Mentoring or Supervision, as well as 80 accredited training providers. You can find the history of EMCC and other relevant information in this link (+).

In particular, EMCC performs its function through several roles

  • Research

It carries out ongoing research work in the field of mentoring and coaching, through commissions in which members can participate. The results are disseminated in various forms (publications, webinars, conferences) and made available to the global coaching and mentoring community, thus contributing to its development and professionalisation.

  • Code of ethics

It safeguards the professional and ethical practice of coaches, mentors and supervisors, and one of its main tools is the Global Code of Ethics, which is subscribed to by several organisations. The Global Code of Ethics guides members and partners in the practice of their profession. More on this code will be mentioned in the last section of this topic.

  • Training + Networking

It organises multiple activities for the continuous development and training of coaches, mentors and supervisors. I would particularly highlight the webinars on a wide range of topics and the conferences, which are also an excellent tool for networking with colleagues in the sector. The Annual International Conference, the Research Conference, the The Mentoring Programme, as well as the country conferences are just a few examples.

  • Accreditation for individuals and training entities

It has an accreditation system for professionals, following a rigorous application process in which relevant training, client practice, reflective capacity and understanding of the code of ethics, among others, must be justified.

  • Professionals can obtain EIA (European Individual Accreditation).

THIS EXISTS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS DEPENDING ON THE EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL LEVEL OF THE APPLICANT:

  • Foundation Level
  • Practitioner Level
  • Senior Practioner Level
  • Master Practioner Level

An EMCC credential provides credibility The coach or mentor can be used as an objective way of assessing the professionalism of the coach or mentor in their work with clients. In this link (+) for more information on EMCC's EIA accreditation scheme.

EMCC also accredits training programmes, again through a rigorous process of evaluation of programme content and training capacity. The credential awarded to training institutions is the EQA (European Quality Award).

Coaches and mentors trained in accredited programmes can obtain their individual EMCC credential directly through their training organisation. An important fact is that has a database of accredited Coaches, Mentors, Supervisors and Training Programmes on its website, thus helping to give visibility to all accredited partners.
